Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

What is MMA – MMA is combining a variety of martial arts into one universal combat system. For example, a martial artist may have been raised learning one foundational martial art, i.e. Muay Thai Kickboxing, Kenpo Karate, Brazilian JiuJitsu, Boxing, Wrestling etc. Although this person may have a strength in one particular martial art, combining the martial arts makes it more tricky for a practitioner to defend. In saying that, competitors that take the time to widen their arsenal of martial arts and becomes more capable of transitioning from a striking martial art to a grappling or ground based martial art. Thus making the person a mixed martial artist. MMA is also one of fastest growing competitive sports in the world.

What MMA is NOT – MMA is not the same as the UFC. The UFC is a promotion that warrants the use of Mixed Martial Arts – kind of like saying the NFL is not football. MMA collectively is a self-defense system, however it is not a stand alone martial art.
